On June 5th,
member Food Banks of the America’s
Second Harvest network and other hunger-relief
organizations around the country will come together to recognize the
6th annual Hunger Awareness Day to draw attention to the
more than 35 million Americans who currently live
at risk of hunger. This national grassroots
movement raises awareness about the solvable problem of hunger in
America and the work that these organizations, like Northern
Illinois Food Bank, do to end hunger.
Organizing over
200 food banks from around the United States to deliver a unified
message can prove to be quite a challenge but NIFB’s very own
Executive Director & CEO, Dennis Smith, has proved to be up to the
challenge. Last year, Smith had the distinct honor of being chosen to Chair
the 2007 Hunger Awareness Day Committee, which oversees the planning
and implementation of
events
across the country. With representatives from America’s Second
Harvest and 12 network member food banks, this committee is working
to educate more people than ever this June on the critical issue of
hunger in America. “While Northern Illinois Food Bank has a
vision to create a hunger-free northern Illinois, we must also work
on the national level to advocate for the rights of the hungry.
Hunger Awareness Day offers this opportunity for local hunger-relief
organizations to join together in one voice,” stated Dennis Smith.
Leaving no stone unturned, the committee has been busy developing
market research, donor involvement, agency and faith outreach
initiatives, public policy, and strategic direction. Northern
Illinois Food Bank is proud to have Dennis Smith leading this
national movement and establishing the importance of Hunger
Awareness Day to all Americans.

Virtual Food
Drives:
Fight Hunger Online
Hunger is not a virtual reality, it's
a reality, but
you can make a difference in the lives of hungry neighbors by
participating in a Virtual Food Drive. Want to do a traditional food
drive, but have limited space to collect the items? Maybe you are
just looking for a another way to get involved in the fight against
hunger? NIFB offers an online way to get involved as an alternative
- Virtual Food Drives!
The Virtual Food Drive is a fund
drive to provide more food to hungry neighbors. By participating in
a Virtual Food Drive, online financial contributions to NIFB are
dedicated to acquiring food that is
needed most by hungry neighbors who rely on NIFB’s food assistance
programs 365 days a year. NIFB is the single most important
source of food for its pantry partners. Many
workplaces lack the space to store barrels and boxes of food donated
by employees and customers during traditional food drives.
Easy and quick-to-use, the Virtual
Food Drive allows participants to “shop” online from a list of
items most needed by Northern Illinois Food Bank. Donors use any
major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Diners Club, and
American Express) for payment on a secure site and receive an
e-receipt immediately.

Hunger in Our Midst
By Lisa Scott, NIFB Field Representative
After 4
½ years with the food bank, I could write volumes of books
recounting stories of lives restored because of the food bank and
its network of partner agencies. I am touched every time I set foot
in a pantry and come across a parent, senior, child, or an entire
family in tears because of the help they found. Here is one of
those stories.
“Mabel” woke up one morning,
lightheaded and exhausted, but no longer bothered by
the growl of
an empty stomach. After her morning prayers, she
went to the phone and dialed a prayer line explaining that she was
starving in her middle-class home, and could they please pray for
her. The call came in to NIFB at about 11:45am. The DJ
at the prayer line was desperately seeking emergency food assistance
for an elderly lady in Bensenville. NIFB reps contacted a
local pantry and within the hour, a volunteer was on the doorstep
with 3 bags full of frozen meats, produce, canned goods, breads and
juices. Mabel peeked through the small window, opened the
door, and burst into tears. Skin and bones, she easily could
have starved to death in her own middle-class suburban home.
Why, you
ask, did Mabel not simply call on family or friends for help?
In America, many people feel it is a disgrace to be without food, or
the ability to obtain it. Too many think if you need help, you
must have done something wrong. This sad fact could result in
under-nutrition, deteriorating health, and even premature deaths.
There are no alarms or banners outside the homes of the hungry in
America. We must remember that the food or money we donate to
fight hunger could be going to the person right next door to us.
You can support the Northern
Illinois Food Bank's mission to provide nutritious food to all those
in need through our own efforts and those of our non-profit
partners.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:
One of the greatest feelings in the world is knowing that we as
individuals can make a difference. Ending hunger in America is a
goal that is literally within our grasp.
